Sourcefire VRT Rules Update

Synopsis:

The Sourcefire VRT is aware of multiple vulnerabilities affecting Microsoft products.

Details:

Microsoft Security Advisory MS08-070:
Microsoft Visual Basic ActiveX controls contain vulnerabilities that may allow a remote attacker to execute code on a vulnerable system.

Rules to detect attacks targeting these vulnerabilities are included in this release and are identified with GID 3, SIDs 15084 through 15104 and 15118 through 15121.

Microsoft Security Advisory MS08-071:
A vulnerability in Microsoft GDI may allow a remote attacker to execute code on a vulnerable system via specially crafted WMF file.

A rule to detect attacks targeting this vulnerability is included in this release and is identified with GID 3, SID 15105.

Microsoft Security Advisory MS08-072:
Microsoft Word contains several vulnerabilities that may allow a remote attacker to execute code on a vulnerable system.

Rules to detect attacks targeting these vulnerabilities are included in this release and are identified with GID 3, SIDs 15082 through 15083, 15106 through 15107 and 15125.

Microsoft Security Advisory MS08-073:
Microsoft Internet Explorer contains several vulnerabilities that may allow a remote attacker to execute code on a vulnerable system.

Rules to detect attacks targeting these vulnerabilities are included in this release and are identified with GID 3, SIDs 15109 through 15115 and 15122.

Microsoft Security Advisory MS08-074:
Microsoft Excel contains several vulnerabilities that may allow a remote attacker to execute code on a vulnerable system.

A rule to detect attacks targeting these vulnerabilities is included in this release and is identified with GID 3, SID 15117.

Additionally, a previously released rule identified with GID 3, SID 13972 will also generate events for attacks targeting these vulnerabilities.

Microsoft Security Advisory MS08-075:
Microsoft Windows contains a vulnerability that may allow a remote attacker to execute code on an affected system.

A rule to detect attacks targeting these vulnerabilities is included in this release and is identified with GID 3, SID 15116.

Additionally, a previously released rule identified with GID 1, SID 13911 will also generate events for attacks targeting these vulnerabilities.

Microsoft Security Advisory MS08-076:
Microsoft Windows Media Components contains a vulnerability that may allow a remote attacker to execute code on a vulnerable system.

A rule to detect attacks targeting these vulnerabilities is included in this release and is identified with GID 3, SID 15124.

Microsoft Security Advisory MS08-077:
Microsoft Sharepoint Server contains a vulnerability that may allow a remote attacker to access critical data and possibly escalate privileges.

A rule to detect attacks targeting these vulnerabilities is included in this release and is identified with GID 3, SID 15108.
