Fatal error while Configuring rules-very urgent

When i tried executing rule(s) from snort,
"the rule(s) is not configured it just displays the various option to set the rules."
its shows me the 32 rule pattern and end with a Fatal error, How do i go about configuring rules in snort. [i tried the example rules given as per the snort document]
Can anybody suggest how to get rid of this error immediatetly.
