could someone point me to something which would discuss the different types of attacks, descriptions of, etc. perhaps "intrusion 101" type of info?

I haven't looked at it yet but I keep seeing it as part of Onfosec Mag, try http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/ and I think secruityfocus.com has some old articles that could still give you some background.
