just for your information. if you really need to see the power of Snort get yourself: Apache, Php, MySql, and of course Base...
there may be many new things for you to learn but it can be done!
there is a plenty of info on the web on how it all connects.

Recently i make a IDS box with Windows XP....
Snort 2.4.5 + MySQL 5.0 + BASE
I probe with hackers tools and Snort detecte this traffic.
- You must install lib WinPcap..., Snort 2.4.5 and extract rules.
- Check sniffer with Snort (snort.exe -v -i#) (i#= number of the network interface)
- Config snort.conf
- Check the snort like as IDS (snort -v -c: c:\snort\etc\snort.conf -l c:\snort\log -i# (i#= number of the network interface)
- Install Snort Service
snort /service /install -c: c:\snort\etc\snort.conf -l c:\snort\log -i# (i#= number of the network interface)

Could you please give me the link for installing the "Snort" you guys are talking about coz I searched the web and found many links but I couldn't say which one is the snort for windowsxp
and please guys don't be so tough and tell us how to install it coz I am a graduate from university and my final project is "intrusion detection" and I need to see how snort works so I would write a program that would do the same job and maybe enhancing its performance and not writing a new one since it is an open source!!!
another request is:
please give me the source code coz i searched the internet and found nothing!!

Rose, if you are just looking to install Snort on XP, run the executable at http://www.snort.org/dl/binaries/win32/Snort_2_6_1_1_Installer.exe
Source code is at http://www.snort.org/got_source/source.html

I got the installation but I haven't installed it yet!! Thanx to you anyway.

I really couldn't figure out which one is the one I need!! Also, I don't know how to get it from that link coz it says (CVS) and I don't know what that is?? I also haven't seen such link before

another Q is about the installation:
- Is it ok to install it on a personal computer with xp or does it have to be a server??
-Does the program require specific programs or VMs installed before it??

if there are another programs that should be installed please give me links for them, if possible!! :)
if not, give me the names of the programs exactly with the version required so I could get them from somewhere else!!
and please tell me the order of installation (which one comes first)??

You could also just grab the latest tar.gz from the same place you grabbed the snort.exe. Never tried DL'ing from windows but give this a shot...

Server or workstation it doesn't matter although I would suggest Linux as opposed to Windows.
Does it require specific programs? I think on Windows it does need winpcap. And you may want to install BASE. Look at the docs section of snort.org. If you are dead set on Windows, look here...
