Snort not starting from init.d

Hi;
I have just installed Snort. However when I try starting it (snortd start) I get the following error message:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/snortd start
/etc/sysconfig/snort: line 1: ELF: command not found
Starting snort: [FAILED]
If I go into the the /etc/sysconfig/ folder and execute Snort from there ./snort [options] it seems to work fine, i.e. the service is running and I am able to log snort data.
I'm running FC3 with Snort 2.2.0
