Getting error The interface name has not been specified

Posted by jasrahl on March 15, 2005 10:49:38

I run snort -W and I get the following

Interface Device Description
-------------------------------------------
1

No description just an interface number.

Then when I try to run snort - v -i 1

I get an error

Initializing Network Interface
ERROR: OpenPcap() device open:
The interface name has not been specified.
Fatal Error, Quitting..

I know that it must be the interface card that is pretty obvious but I dont see where I can specify it or where I have it setup incorrectly.

I am trying to run it on WinXP SP2 with a broadcom GB NIC. I thought the issue may be in the OS version or the NIC so I tried it out on a Windows 2000 with a Intel 10/100 and got the same issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Jason

I used winpcap version 2.3 and it fixed the issue
