one box setup

Posted by TCinNC on March 08, 2005 04:34:14

hi

i have one single dedicated web/mail server co-located at a hosting provider. i cannot afford another box there, or a firewall. is it effective (no need to tell me it is not ideal) to install snort on the same machine i intend to protect?

thanks,
TC

Hi TC,

That should work fine assuming that the services running on the box aren't heavily utilized. Snort will eat up some performance, but it shouldn't be too bad if the box isn't experiencing heavy traffic.
